Chapter 3 What is resilience and how to I get more

"According to Websters Dictionary Resilience is defined as noun re·sil·ience ri-ˈzil-yən(t)s 1: the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress 2 : an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change

Life (much like a transformation of your mindset) is a journey filled with peaks and valleys, moments of triumph and times of deep challenge. In these challenging times, the quality that often makes the most significant difference is resilience.

Resilience is the inner strength that helps us recover from setbacks, adapt to change, and keep going in the face of adversity. This chapter explores the compassionate and transformative power of resilience, offering insights and strategies to nurture this vital quality in ourselves and others and how to better your ability to become more resilient.

Resilience is more than just bouncing back from difficulties; it's about navigating the journey of life with courage, hope, and grace. It's the capacity to face hardships without losing our sense of self or our zest for life. Resilience is not about being unaffected by adversity but about being able to adapt, grow, and even thrive because of it.

Here are some things to consider when you’re trying to move the resilience needle in your life.

Understanding and acknowledging our emotions is crucial. Resilient people are in touch with their feelings and are not afraid to express them. This awareness helps in managing emotions and prevents them from becoming overwhelming. Maintaining a hopeful outlook, even in tough times, is a hallmark of resilience. Optimism doesn't mean ignoring difficulties but believing in the possibility of better outcomes.

Being kind to ourselves during hard times is essential and admittedly this is my biggest downfall. Self-compassion involves treating ourselves with the same care and understanding we would offer a dear friend.

Strong, supportive relationships are the bedrock of resilience. Friends, family, and community provide the emotional support that helps us endure and recover.  Having a sense of purpose gives us direction and motivation. It helps us stay focused on what truly matters, even when faced with challenges. The ability to adapt to new circumstances is a critical aspect of resilience. Flexibility in thinking and behavior allows us to navigate change more effectively.

Resilience is not just about surviving difficult times; it's about thriving in spite of them.

Building resilience is a personal journey, unique to each individual. However, there are universal strategies that can help nurture resilience so take note because this stuff matters.

Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness involves staying present and fully engaging with the current moment. This practice can help manage stress and build emotional awareness. Consider yoga or meditation and try to create some quiet time for your brain.  Shoot for 30-45 minutes.

Develop Healthy Coping Mechanisms: Engage in activities that promote well-being, such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time in nature. Healthy coping mechanisms can provide relief and build resilience.  The operative word being “healthy.”

Foster Connections: Strengthen relationships with loved ones. Reach out for support when needed, and offer support to others. Building a strong social network is crucial for resilience.  It might really surprise you how beneficial making that call you’ve been avoiding can really be.

Set Realistic Goals: Break down large challenges into manageable steps. Setting and achieving small goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and build confidence. When someone tells me they want to lose 40lbs. I respond with “let’s start with 5, and go from there.”

Maintain a Positive Outlook: Focus on the positives in your life, and practice gratitude. Keeping a gratitude journal can help shift your perspective and foster a more optimistic outlook.  Like Henry Ford said “whether you believe you can or can’t you’re right.”

Learn from Experience: Reflect on past experiences and identify the lessons learned. Understanding how you've overcome previous challenges can boost your confidence and prepare you for future difficulties.  It’s important to remember these are lessons, not failures (growth mindset).  Wisdom is critical for emotional intelligence.

Resilience is a journey, not a destination. Let’s say that a little louder for those in the back!! Resilience is a journey, not a destination. We must embrace our vulnerabilities, learning lessons from our experiences, and growing stronger through each challenge we face. It's important to remember that building resilience takes time and effort, and it's okay to seek help along the way. Therapists, counselors, and support groups can provide valuable assistance and guidance.

In the end, resilience is about finding hope and strength in the face of adversity. It's about believing in our ability to overcome challenges and trusting that we have the inner resources to navigate whatever comes our way. By cultivating resilience, we not only enhance our own lives but also inspire and support those around us.

Let us embrace the journey of resilience with compassion and courage, knowing that each step we take brings us closer to a life of greater strength, hope, and fulfilment.  In order for you to uncover what a growth mindset is you need to discover what it means to be resilient.

To better understand resilience you should meet my friend Chris.  On way more than one occasion he did what most people with legs can’t do from a wheelchair."
